What to do when your child decides to become a vegetarian?

My eight year old grandson has decided he is a vegetarian. I admire has gung-ho attitude but as a result it has created concerns at his school when he refuses to eat lunch because when there are meals that contain meat, like meat tacos for an example. At home it is okay, but how do you explain to the school administration so there will not be any negative repercussions? Any response will be welcomed.

The choice to be a vegetarian is a personal choice. Most schools should respect your dietary habits. However, if it is an issue, could you pack him a lunch to avoid the problem?

Children are usually very popular for not eating their vegetables and for your grandson at such tender age to decide to become a vegetarian is commendable. I am usually close to the lunch lines at some point and hear children pointing out that they do not want any vegetable with their lunches to the cafeteria staff, i would always encourage them to give it a try but the majority refuse from doing this.

It is really sad to know that the school is not able to cater to his needs, i know that in schools the diversity among students exist and as such the institution should seek to cater to their needs as best as possible. This comes across as being discriminating, i think you need to go and have a talk with the administrators to fully understand what is happening and seek to get to a resolution whereby the needs of your grandson is being taken care of.

Nobody learns on an empty stomach, get to the bottom of it quickly!

There is really nothing to explain. You don't need meat to survive. In fact eating plant base foods will keep you healthy. Protein can be found in plant base sources easily. The school should have some veggie options for him.

Eating the right kind of food is quite important for a human being. Hence if your kid is not eating meat then it is important that they get all the required nutrients from other food also. When it comes to talking to school authorities just make sure that required teacher know that he does not eat meat. I am sure they will understand.

I admire your grandson's character. He doesn't feel like he should compromise his beliefs for anyone. He just may be destined for this career! He needs your support. Perhaps you can speak to the school's administration about implementing vegetarian options in the cafeteria.
