All Ages What age is a good age to start music lessons?

You can begin training as early as 4 years old. You will want to start practicing before 10 and piano is a good starting instrument as you will learn how to read music, use both hands and have multiple scales. If the learner doesn't enjoy piano try guitar for a different feel.

Have a look at Stave House resources for teaching music to children.

I think 3 years old is the best age to start. Your child is not that young for her not to understand yet what her interests are. At the same time, she's also not that old yet to keep on learning as much as she can.

The most important thing here is really ask her what she likes. There's no point forcing a child to learn the piano, when she prefers to play the violin instead.

I think a kid should start as young as possible, which is between 3 to 4 years old would be ok. I started to play instruments when I was 4 years old, which I took a year of piano lesson. It wasn't difficult to learn, but I have heard a kid should start their music lessons while they're young to give extra time to practice and become skillful. Music is different from other subjects, which is a combination of experience, practice, and knowledge.

She really wants to play them all. How do I help her narrow it down?

Well, pick the ONE instrument that she will likely to focus on because I think a person can only focus and do better with one instrument. When I was little, I had 3 options: piano, guitar, and saxophone. I picked piano because that was what I wanted to focus on. Plus, it was easier for me to learn how to use a piano because I didn't really like guitar and saxophone. So, depending on her preference, ask her to choose one, then go from there. If she wants to practice more than one instrument, then don't do it at the same time. Practice one instrument let's say every other day or something.

I think that you should begin lessons as soon as the child begins showing an interest. The reason that I say this is because very young children can show an interest in music and have the ability to mimic us, therefore we have the opportunity to teach. It's all about making lessons fun for the child in order to hold thier interest. I have recently picked up the guitar at 39 to start learning...and it's hard, but I purchased Rocksmith 2014 and the lessons are fun, which make me want to practice and improve.

I think 6 is a good age to start a child learning. Before then, play different types of music that use specific types of instruments and see what the child gravitates towards. This will help you know what type of instrument you should start your child on.

I would highly recommend starting with the piano. I started learning piano at the age of 6 and it's the perfect first instrument for many reasons. From a personal experience, it is simple to learn with the same keys (A through G) which are repeated in octaves. And here's the thing, if you learn one octave, you basically learn them all. Reading music will also come naturally. After I started learning piano, I went on to learning guitar and the violin and found it relatively easier than my friends.

I think a child can start learning music at the age of 4 years old. They can learn how to play an instrument like a clarinet or they can learn how to play the piano. If a kid learns music early, they can be outstanding musicians by the time they can into their pre teen years.[DOUBLEPOST=1392487032][/DOUBLEPOST]I think a child can start learning music at the age of 4 years old. Is there really an age limit to learning things? I personally think that the earlier they started on something, the more they can understand and perform well in whatever it is that they are learning! Sometimes we heard of child prodigies that earn universities degrees or can perform something on par to an adult's level, and if you really look into them, you will see that most of them started learning on a specific subjects when they are still very, very young.

You could learn music at any age, but it's always best to start off young. It would be easier for you to instill lessons into your mind at a young age because your head is fresh at a young age.

As soon as they show an interest. I think that music lessons, like many other lessons should be started early, but made to be fun so that the child doesn't lose interest too soon. Music is an important part of any well rounded education and if you can get them immersed early, the more benefit the child will have. I started my daughter at 4 and she can now play piano, guitar and is working on the drums. She's 15.

When you get into elementary school, they would usually teach you how to play the recorder to start your tastes in music, but another simple instrument you could play is the piano, because there are different levels to it, so it's completely fine if you are a beginner. It's simple to memorize the notes to play, the keys, and reading sheet music gets simpler once you've got the notes down. A good age to start piano at is any young age, because it's like getting a head start the earlier you begin.

I definitely think it's reasonable to start as young as possible....it all depends on the individual child of course, but I'd say 3-5 years old is a fair starting point for most kids. Our son started playing the guitar at 4 years old, and the drums and keyboard not long after. He's 10 now and is still developing his skills, but it really shows that he started at such a formative age. It's been beneficial to how he learns other things, as well.

I think 3 years old is perfect timing. Allow the child to pick the instrument. This way they're personality shines through, and it also gives them a chance to start making decisions about who they believe they are. I have a 3 year old nephew that plays the drums. Without taking any lessons he has somehow learn how to play songs that he likes by ear. It is an amazing thing to see!
