The Importance of Having Deep Knowledge of Your Subject

While in a school recently, I saw a teacher haranguing some students. The students apparently had previously asked the teacher to help them solve a maths problem and he didn't get the right answer. The students unimpressed, had approached another teacher, who solved the problem.

The teacher wasn't happy about it.

It had me thinking that there are many teachers who may be teaching a subject, are expected to have deep knowledge of that subject but actually don't. Odds are though you can hide that fact, the truth eventually will be found out. And you students will have little trust in your abilities and their performance as a result would suffer.

Teachers must assess themselves, find out where their knowledge is weak, read more to acquire that knowledge or even go a step further and take classes to improve themselves. When you know your subject well, getting students to understand what you are teaching will be much easier.

I definitely noticed that in some of my teachers growing up. Some were truly fountains of knowledge, passionate about everything they taught - and others didn't seem to have the passion, the drive, or that continuous quest for self improvement. I think it's like any industry though, there are good and there are bad employees in any profession.

Teacher should be a role model in the process of education and the most important thing to gain such recognition is to possess thorough knowledge of his subject. Otherwise he may lose respect of his students and fail to motivate his students. Besides knowing the matter he or she teaches, teacher should have the right approach and know the ways how to transfer that knowledge to students.

That is correct. The teacher must have a deeper and wider understanding of his or her subject. You could not give what you don't have.

You cannot give something that you don't have. We need to have a deep knowledge and understanding of our subject so we can teach our students effectively.

Hi,
Effective teacher and professional better understand first what they are doing to develop their proficiency and also they can connect to their student or subordinate.
Having a better idea or deep knowledge with the subject is one of the gateway to have a connection not only with the student but also to those who are going to watch them. Their are some scenio that they will ask you which is not part of your lesson plan, and because you better know the subject, you are prepared and confidently answering it eventhough it is outside the box. Nowaday teachers has an advance training now due to enourmous change in our society.
Thank you

Well, such a thing can happen when the teachers are not competent enough and lack a thorough knowledge of the there subject. It is very necessary for the School Authorities to scrutinize the qualifications of the teachers who are employed at the school. It is expected of the teachers to have complete knowledge of the subjects they are teaching to the students. When Teachers are not well qualified, then it will have an effect on the quality of education that is given to the students.

Incompetence should be avoided if you are a teacher. Teachers are considered the front-liners of training the next generation. What students do you expect to produce if the ones teaching them right now already displays minimal knowledge on the subject that they are supposed to teach?

Schools should screen teachers first if they are actually competent with the subject that they want to teach the kids. The quality of learning that students' get is based greatly on their knowledge, and it would be really bad to have incompetent teachers teaching our kids things that they aren't even sure of.

I totally agree with this point, it is much better to be able to master the subjects in which we have to teach other people, besides that allows us to act with greater security before anyone, but the reality is that sometimes we do not know everything and in Those cases are when our attitude comes into play, which should be to seek to strengthen, as soon as possible, those weaknesses, instead of remaining ignorant in those points that the worst attitude we could adopt. But ultimately we must ensure that we master our subject as best we can, in order to effectively transmit knowledge to others.

I don't think it is right for a teacher to help students with the difficulty of another subject. In the case of your actual example that one teacher had given the wrong answer to the question which tends to lose her credibility with the students. Even if the teacher is also a math teacher it is not right to provide assistance to students of another teacher. That incident will always happen if the teacher is too accommodating to the students.

sadly, most of the teachers think teaching only as a prtofession to draw monthly salary, they never focus on imparting knowledge and wisdom. I do not claim to have the deep knowledge on the subject I teach, however, I always try my best.

I remember my instructor in commercial law subject whose not fun of answering or explaining questions. Instead he would tell us to read and study so will have knowledge and understanding. Sometimes I would feel that he doesn't know his subject or maybe his lazy to entertain us. He forget that law subjects have difficult terms and need some expert for further explanation. His a bit greedy because he doesn't like to share his knowledge and to think that his hired to teach. No one likes that instructor but we don't have a choice. I guess some teachers are not responsible and committed on their service.

I believe that teachers are human and are permitted to make mistakes even with their teaching, but one needs to humble themselves enough to admit to that mistake. Important as it is for a teacher to know everything about what they're teaching, but it is also important to remember that people do make mistake no matter how much knowledge a person has about a topic. Though the teacher did react the wrong way about it, but her reaction is that of any human as well.
