Should students stand up when reciting?

Back in my college days, whenever an instructor called on us to recite, we would always stand up as a show of respect to the instructor (whether we knew of the answer or not). However, I see some schools who no longer let their students stand up when reciting. Which do you think is the better practice?

I had to do this back in elementary school and honestly I wish it was still the practice in school today. I think it helps kids focus when they are providing an answer.

Standing up to recite should be first taught before it is forced unto students. Some students are naturally shy and demure, while others are naturally outgoing and bold. We should teach students how to effectively speak their thoughts before making them stand up in front of their peers.

I think it really depends on the age level. I'm an elementary level teacher and I give my students the option to stand up and address the class when they feel comfortable to do so. I think if you start young, the fear of speaking with be diminished by the time students hit middle and high school level.

When I was in elementary, we would always stand up whenever we would recite. However, in college, we didn't do such a thing anymore unless the professor told us to.

I think it also depends on age. It's good to stand up when reciting as it helps their confidence personally. It also helps peeps keep their attention focused on one point and one person. Again, in college we weren't always asked to stand up when reciting but I think it's good practice and make all my students do it.

I always like the standing up part.

I mean of course students can get a little bit nervous with going to the front of the class while reciting something, but in the long plan it is only helping them. Of course if there are certain students who really dont like to do it, you can talk to them and get to the problem itself.

I think it would be nice to stand up just to show that you are standing for what you are saying and that you really mean what you say..
