Idiomatic Expressions are a group of words that have a figurative meaning different from the literal meanings of each word on its own. It is a particular style or manner of expression often used by English speakers as a collection of wise sayings. Idioms allow authors and speakers to play with words by describing a situation in a more creative way. They also share cultural and historical information and broaden people's understanding of a language (Digital Polyglot, 2017). In this activity, the students will make their own idiomatic expressions with the help of the examples given by the teacher.
Steps:
The class will play the Pictionary activity wherein students will guess the phrase being asked using drawings as clues. (e.g. a piece of cake, bread and butter, etc.)
Afterwards, he or she should ask the students about their observation of the given words or phrase.
Once done, he or she should introduce Idiomatic Expressions. A short discussion about it should also ensue.
As an application of what the students have learned, they will have to make their own idiomatic expression. (e.g. under the weather, cloud nine, a needle in a haystack, etc.) by answering the Idiomatic Expressions worksheet.
Lastly, the students should share their idiomatic expressions to the class.
