All Ages Do you consider fashion as art?

I actually believe fashion is art. People, like myself, express themselves through fashion, and art is a way of expression.

What do you guys think?

People try far to hard to put the definition of art in a single category box. Art is so much more than water color paintings that you put on your wall or oil master pieces that hang in museums. Photo realistic sketches and finely chiseled marble sculptures do not set the standard for what defines art. Art is everywhere creatively and expression meet. Fashion is a virtual play ground for creatively and free expression , so of course fashion is art.

Of COURSE! I consider any hobby/career that deals with creativity and constructing something on your own -- ART. Simple. It's a creative process! Just like acting, singing, writing, etc. -- it's a creative thought and would be considered an art form and a way of expression.

Absolutely. I think you could classify anything that involves creativity and out of the box thinking as "art" Whether that be music, paintings, dance, food, fashion, etc, there's really no limit to what you could classify as art. Probably the only thing I'd consider as a necessity is that it be a form of self-expression in who you are.

Agree. The moment you put art in a single category, then you are in direct contradiction to the principles art. More than "puritanism," art is freedom and self-expression.

Yes. On the classic spectrum of visual arts, there is "fine art" on on end and "arts & crafts" on the other with fashion landing somewhere in the middle. The spectrum is typically based on the purpose or "meaning" in the art, and the difficulty of execution.

I'd definitely agree. Although there are many definitions of art, most would define it to be "something that expresses an idea or message in a visually stimulating manner". And, thinking about fashion, it definitely does the above. It's both a medium of expression and it's aesthetically pleasing!

Plus, if you compare some of the elements of visual arts to fashion, you find that you incorporate a lot of said elements in your style. For example, you're using colours to convey meaning whether you're conscious of it or not. You're using shape, you're using lines, you're using patterns.

Yes, absolutely I think that fashion is art, but as with all art, some of it is better than others, some of it is more tasteful than others.
Some fashion out there is tacky, some of it is beautiful and elegant. There is fashion out there that is simply breathtaking and one can't deny the artistic value of it.

Oh without a doubt! Fashion is definitely a form of art. With fashion you have to put a lot of consideration in color theory which is a strong element of art. Clothes made by designers are called "Pieces". They are a piece of their creation.

Yes, definitely. I think that a lot of high end fashion designers are really just creating art pieces and are not really creating designs with the goal of too many people actually wearing them. If you look at some of the clothing that appears on runways, you can tell that most of it is super impractical.

Absolutely. Art is the expression of a persons heart, mind, and soul. It encompasses a persons culture, beliefs, and idea into a tangible piece that others are able to see. Fashion is a means of one persons art to be utilized by another to express themselves while encompassing the expression of its creator.

I agree that art can be considered a fashion. Like a writer creates entire worlds from mere words and sentences, and an artist crafts a masterpiece from simple colors and brushes, a person can weave together threads and concepts to bring something marvelous to life.

From what I understand about art, it involves self expression. And since fashion stems from self expression, I would say that it is a form of art. Putting a definition on art is very difficult and maybe I'll go so far as to say purposeless? Anything can be art. Why label it? It doesn't seem to be a concept that needs to be classified or labeled because when you do that, you diminish the beauty of it.

Of course it is art, even if its high end fashion or contemporary.

I really like to watch documentaries on fashion, because you can really look behind the curtain. And the inspiration on certain types of clothes.

Definitely. I consider fashion as a form of art as it also pertains to creativity, and innovativeness. Fashion designers/enthusiasts do mix, and match, and use colors, and shapes in their clothing to express themselves.

Of course it is. It has always been consider an artistic expression. Even if it didn't, one can argue in that favour, because it is just a perfect way for a person to express his or her skills in the way some piece of clothing would be made, which designs are to be used, what kind of material it is going to be made of, etc. Just like painting, fashion requires artistic side.

I also consider fashion as an art. I actually admire individuals who can express themselves with the clothes they're wearing. I love seeing uniquely dressed individuals, those who don't just follow fashion rules but defy them. They're like the rebels of the fashion industry. And although everyone can be fashionable, not everyone can be artistic while being fashionable.

Fashion is an art. It expresses one's personality in three dimensions. Creativity is a key component of art and no two fashion designers will create the same impressions. This is unlike science in which a fact or theory has to be universal.

It depends... I mainly see fashion as design, but it can become art in specific conditions. I consider that art is a final product in itself that is meant to be visual and appreciated but that doesn't necessarily address a need or function and the interaction buyer/art is usually minimal. Design is the exact opposite. Also, the creator (fashion designer) normally has mass-production in mind unless it's made as a unique original (the way artwork is). Now for example, if a dress is made out of paper and it is only made to be observed in a store/museum but not worn then it becomes art. Or another example of how fashion is art is the extravagant clothing created specifically for a runway show (not created for the final consumer, it's just a trend starter). That is my humble opinion. But I agree with you, that on a user level, fashion is a way of expressing oneself.

Yeah I see fashion as art because you are expressing yourself threw design just like you do with drawing and painting. There's a difference between finding clothing just to wear, and finding clothing to express yourself. When I go shopping for clothing, I look for what I would consider art so that I can express myself threw it.
