Procedure
| Introduction (10-15 minutes) |
| Start with the presentation [Introducing the number line] (PPT/PPTX or PDF - slides are called pages.) Page 2: Introduce the number line. Ask for the students to put their hands up if they have seen the number line before. Who has used the number line? This will give you a valuable early assessment of any of your students prior learning. Proceed to page 3: Ask the students to write the missing number on their mini whiteboards or tablets. Hint: You can ask for an answer as a number and/or words. Answers. 7 (Seven) and 14 (Fourteen). For some classes you might want to cover a different number and repeat. Proceed to page 4: The students will build their own number line by adding the numbers in the correct order. This is an interactive page, you can have the students drag the number to the correct place on the page. (Exit presenter view to use interactive mode in PPT or PPTX). Alternatively, simply draw a line from the number to the correct place (if using PDF for presentation or no touch screen board). Use worksheet: NumberlineBlank - Your students can then use this number line later. ![]() You can remove the hint for higher ability students or cut them out for placing on the number line for lower ability students. Check all the students have great number lines! |
| Exploration (30 minutes) | |
| Teacher Model (10 minutes) We are now going to explore using the number line. Once you have your pupils attention continue the number line presentation from page 5. Each page will explore a stage of adding 1 to 5. Page 8 shows all the steps in colour. Pages 9-13: Another addition question 3+1 for you to complete as a class or in table groups if you wish. Pages 14-17: A step by step model for subtracting using the number line. Page 18: Invites your students to use the number line to solve some questions. (20 minutes) It is time for your students to practice. Either progress through the worksheets from A to D or use them with students of different ability. Show the worksheet to your students. Explain they are to add or subtract 1 using the number line. [TABLE=nobackground, noborder] [TR] [TD] |

| Summary/Plenary (10-15 minutes) |
| Ask your class to look at their 1-10 number line. (This can be one they created earlier). We're going to play a game called fast fingers, using our 10 fingers we're going to look at our number line and either go up or go down. Pages 19-25*: So we start by wiggling our fingers in the air. When the question displays, point at the first number with our fingers. If we see +1 we move right one space. | If we see -1 we move left one space. We then show the answer with our fingers. e.g. ( 4 + 1, we put out finger on 4, move right 1 space, hold up 5 fingers!) Who can be the fastest! - This is great for larger classes, you can get a quick assessment of who is using the number line. *It's good to use the number line on these pages to model this for your students. You can then create addition and subtraction questions of your own and play fast fingers on the number line. |
| Extension (5 minutes) |
| Worksheet D (ext) - You could ask students to write their answers in words. Can your students spot a mistake in Bill & Jill's flower shop? ans. Flowers is spelt incorrectly as flours. |
