Introduction/Overview

In this activity/game the students will practice their skills in addition and subtraction Tic Tac Toe is is a very popular children's pencil and paper board game. The object of the game is to place three consecutive marks, either "X" or "O", in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal row. But, in this activity instead of marking the grids at random, the students will be answering addition & subtraction problems that correspond to the grid they want to mark.

Math Tic-Tac-Toe Grids Math Tic-Tac-Toe Activity Sheet Pen and Paper

Procedure

10 - 15 minutes The goal of the game is for students to mark three grids consecutively, with either "X" or "O", in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal row. The students will be asked to answer the addition and subtraction problems corresponding to the grid before they can mark it with "X" or "O" on the Math Tic-tac-toe Grid. Steps: Download and print out the Math Tic-tac-toe Grid. There are 4 grids, just print enough copies for your students. Cut into individual Math Tic Tac Toe Grid. Laminate (optional) Download the Tic-tac-toe Math Activity sheet. The students will be assigned as the "X" and the other "O" and then reversed on the next grid. The students will be asked to answer the Math problems corresponding to the grid they want to mark with "X" or "O" on the Math Tic-tac-toe Grid. Player "X" is first and then player "O" after. The goal of the students is to be the first player to get three in a row on the 3-by-3 grid.
