Introduction/Overview
A tangram is a two-dimensional re-arrangement puzzle using 7 geometric shapes. It is played by creating different figures using 7 geometric shapes. The students will learn to classify shapes, learn spatial relationships, and understand how geometric shapes can be decomposed.

Procedure

A tangram is a two-dimensional re-arrangement puzzle using 7 geometric shapes. Complete the puzzle by moving, rearranging, and rotating the seven shapes to match the sample figures. Steps: Download and print the Tangram cut out shapes (I recommend printing or pasting it in cardboard) Cut the 7 Tangram geometric shapes*. 2 large right triangles 1 medium-sized right triangle 2 small right triangles 1 small square 1 parallelogram Download and print the Tangram Game Cards**. (I recommend printing or pasting in cardboard) Download Activity sheet 1 and Activity sheet 2 Ask the students to find a partner. They will then decide who will be playing "A" and "B" Set up the timer, and play the game for 10 to 15 minutes. In the 1st phase of the game, the students are shown a target shape outline, the player attempts to recreate the shape using the 7 Tangram pieces. All tangram pieces (or tans) must be used, they must lay flat, all must touch and none may overlap. The players who finished figures first gets a point. In the second phase of the game, the students will be asked to get from a deck of Tangram Game Cards. They will then recreate the figure on the card using the 7 tangram pieces. The players who finished figures first gets a point. When the timer goes off, the player with the most number of figures created wins. Note: *You can also ask your students to cut the Tangram shapes as part of the activity. This will provide more hands-on activity for your students. **There are 2 sets of Tangram Game Cards, colored for regular players and black for advanced players.
