Overview
In this lesson, students will learn to read and count in steps of 10 from 0 and in any number. The purpose of these activities is to improve the pupil's skills in step counting.

Objective(s)
  • I can read and write numbers in steps of 10's
  • I will be able to identify the missing number in a pattern of 10's.
  • I can found in 10's backward from any number.

National Curriculum (UK) - Year 2 program of study.Number and place value;
count in steps of 2, 3, and 5 from 0, and in 10s from any number, forward and backward

Add and subtract within 20.

*Lesson 2 will cover 10s & 100s


Procedure
Introduction (5-10 minutes)
  • Gather your pupils' attention
  • Use presentation 1( Slide 1, counting in 10's)and ask your students to recite or write the answers in their mini-whiteboards.
    • Our lesson for today is counting in 10's

    • What objects do you see that are in 10's? (Ans: 2 hands, cherries, the no.10)
    • Activity: Count me in.
      • Introduce the task by doing some skip counting out loud as a whole group. (go to slide 2)

      • Ask your students to predict the next number by filling in the blank number in the sequence. (go to slide 3)

  • If playing presentations is not possible then you can use the board to write the following (Refer to Presentation 1 as a model) :
    • Write the following on the board:
      • 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and so on depending on the level of your students.
        Draw 10 dots or stars below each number. Example : ::::: ::::: ::::: ::::: and so on.
        You can now count in three's with the students and circle as required.
      • 50, ___, 70,___, 90, ___ so on depending on the level of your students.
        Ask students for the missing number on mini whiteboards, tablets, or hands up/random questioning. You can now count in three's with the students and circle as required.
      • You can erase random numbers in the list and let them write their answers in their mini white board.

*You can ask pupils to write their answers on a mini whiteboard or hold up their fingers to show you the answers. To assess their understanding before the tasks.
Exploration (15-20 minutes)
This is the main part of your lesson, there will be 2 main parts: Discussion of the lesson and then the students will be asked to answer 2 worksheets.
  • Before you start make sure that your students are paying attention.
  • The teacher will discuss counting by 10's using the number line. (slide no. 4-18)
    • Make sure you explain on the number line how many numbers were skipped in order to reach 10, 20, 30, and so on.
    • Ask them to count the cherries afterward.

    • Note: The teacher can decide until what slide no. to use depending on the level of the students.
  • Ask the students to recite as a group counting in 10's until 150 without the number line as a guide.
    • Counting by 10's ( 0-50), (0-100) or 0-150) depending on the level of your students.
  • Ask the students to answer the activity in the presentation. Fill in the missing number in 10's. (Go to slide 19)
    • Make them write their answers and on their mini white board and call students to recite their answers.

  • Hold up the activity sheets and explain the instructions.

  • You have to do the activities one after the other since they are developmental. (1 & 2 respectively)
Note for Teachers :
  • After each activity sheet is done, make sure you give appropriate feedback and discuss the answers.
  • You can make them used their whiteboards or tablets to discuss the answers.

Summary/Plenary (5-10 minutes)
1. The teacher will ask the students to face their shoulder partners. Usually, the person beside them right or left.
2. They will have an activity called "Rally Robin".
3. Each partner will recite counting by 10's alternately.
  • For example, partner A- will say 10 and partner B - will say 20, and will continue until they reach 50 or 100 depending on the level of the class. Ex. 10,20,30,40, etc..
4. After the activity the teacher will be asking the following question:
  • What part did you enjoy most in the lesson?
  • What part do you think is difficult and needs further explanation?
5. The teacher will review the topics that the students had difficulty with.
To assess their knowledge further;
  • Ask students to count in steps of 10's, forward, and backward. (Go to slide 20)
  • You could do it chorally (as a group or class)
