Can we apply algebraic equations in real life?

y = a+bx

Hmm, what the heck does this even mean?

It's algebra. And it doesn't make sense most of the time. But we had to endure it in high school and college. But, now that I think about it, how can we use algebra in our daily lives? Do we use it when computing our change? When computing interest? Our salary?

What's the use of algebra? What does it teach the students?

I actually asked the same question before if why algebra and other complicated math are invented. :P
But I have answered it myself and I think it is for us to exercise our minds. It is for us to have logic and ability to solve complex problems. Also those who will become math teachers and scientist would have big use of that knowledge.

Actually yes..!!..A Big yes..You can use quadratic equations to find velocity of a ball thrown up..You can solve equations and maximize profits,in case you have started up a business.You can calculate the time to row upstream...and what not..Algebra is integrated with real life.You should know to use it wisely though.>!!

Thanks bala. Next time I'm gonna shoot a basketball during a game, I'm gonna compute the velocity first so that I would be sure that it would go in. Or when I'm gonna drive, I'll first compute how long it would take me to reach point B from point A if I go X kilometers per hour (excluding traffic thus making the computation pretty unrealistic). As for profit maximization, I think complex algebraic equations are not needed though... :D

I think basic mathematics could be related in real life, but when it comes to algebraic expressions, I just don't also see the point of learning it. I took AB English Language in college, and I had to endure algebra throughout my degree.

I think it depends on your line of work. If your job is mostly a desk job, then you'll probably never use this equation. But if your job involves complicated solvings like a scientist, an astronomer, or a sales analyst then you will use algebra and other equations in your work. So it's a bit far off for someone to have a use of algebra in their life, since you're definitely not gonna use them to calculate you height :p.

Ahh... I never really knew why algebra is very important in high school, lol. I mean, I know for sure that I'm not going to take a course that's focused on maths. But yeah, I guess for students who wanted to go into engineering or accountancy, then algebra might be useful in their real lives. As for me, I'm still struggling to find why I had to endure those many hours of torture even if I'm not using algebra now. On the downside, I'm not much of math whiz and my son's about to start school next year. Good luck to us! Hahahahaha! I better brush up on my math now.:p
